Kiran Rao is an Indian film producer, screenwriter and director. She born on 7th, November 1973, into a family from Telangana. She was raised in Kolkata where she attended Loreto House. She graduated in economics from the Sophia College for Women at Mumbai and Masters in Mass Communication Research from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.
She started her career as an assistant director in the epic film Lagaan, starred and produced by Amir Khan, and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, whom she also assisted later on Swades: We, the People.
She also worked as second assistant director with Academy Award nominated director Mira Nair on the indie hit Monsoon Wedding. She scripted and directed the film Dhobi Ghat, under Aamir Khan Productions in 2011.
After Aamir Khan divorced his first wife Reena Dutta in 2002, Rao married actor Khan in December 2005. They met on the sets of Lagaan. Rao was one of the film’s assistant directors. They now live in Bandra, a Mumbai suburb. The couple have a son, Azad Rao Khan, who has been named after Abul Kalam Azad.
